ROG'S VIEWPOINT - Art gallery owner Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) is haunted by the manuscript of her ex-husband's (Jake Gyllenhaal) new novel - the story of a man's revenge after his wife and daughter are raped and murdered. This "story within a story" weaves back and forth between Susan's troubled real life with
current spouse (Armie Hammer) and the book she is reading. This curiosity is at its best when the focus is on the novel's tale of revenge. Jake Gyllenhaal's (playing two roles in this film) masterful portrayal of the driven fictional husband and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a chilling killer are worth watching. But it's Michael Shannon as the detective assigned to catch the killers who absolutely steals this movie. There's much confusion with questions left unanswered, but it may find an audience in the film noir/art house crowd. Fashion designer Tom Ford, who wrote the screenplay and directed, has stitched together a romantic thriller where parts are more satisfying than the whole. ***
